For about a year, I've wished for my own makeup brush set, conducting countless research, constructing endless lists of pros and cons (one of which can be found here). After a while, I managed to content myself with purchasing a twelve-piece set when I save up enough money, a gargantuan feat considering the various temptations playing tug-of-war with my student wallet.

But as they say, good things come to those who wait. With the aid of my sneaky little sister (who suffered my brush set moanings and groanings for quite a while now), my parents surprised me with a delightful present under the Christmas tree. Ripping apart the Christmas wrapper, I found a simple note stating "We will order tomorrow. Love, Mom & Dad. P.S. Flip the page!". I flipped the paper, revealing a print-out picture of a professional makeup brush set.

Nonetheless, it was a very merry Christmas for me.

Gone were the stifling budget confines, my twelve-piece/sixteen-piece brush set woes. I decided to aim big; why not go for the very top - the Suesh 28-Piece Professional Ultimate?

Suesh says:

For full-time professional makeup artists, the extra sets of brushes are perfect for multitasking and more specific applications.

Brush: All Natural - Goat, Squirrel, Pony, and Raccoon hair

Handle: Birch Wood in glossy Black

Brush Length: 8.5 inches

Pouch Size: 29.5 inches wide / 9.5 inches long (when open)

From Right to Left: Large Powder, Small Powder, Round Blush, Angled Blush, Foundation, Big Concealer, Small Concealer, Base, XL Eyeshadow, Large Eyeshadow, Medium Eyeshadow

From Right to Left: Small Eyeshadow, Highlighter, Large Smudge, Medium Smudge, Small Smudge, Contour, Angled Contour, Highlighter, Flat Eyeliner, Narrow Eyeliner, Full Brow, Brow, Tool, Mascara, Brow Comb, Lip (two pieces, not pictured).

The package was due to arrive this morning, and my excitement was already tantamount the moment my eyes first saw daylight. I threw off the covers, hurried downstairs, shrieked when I saw the package waiting for me at the dinner table, grabbed it, and quickly ran back upstairs to stare at the brushes in reverence.

I am unable to give a full review as of now, because a comprehensive review would require at least a few months use. However, my experience with Suesh has been very pleasant. The owner, Sheryll, replied to my inquiries almost immediately after the moment I sent them, even during the height of the holiday season. The transaction was very quick and efficient. Upon receiving the brush set, I loved that it included a small booklet which contained information on how to care for the brushes. The handles looked professional and elegant. The brushes were luxuriously soft, as well! All in all, I believe I made the right choice. (For orders, please go to suesh.com)

From a simple twelve-piece to a professional twenty-eight piece? I really must have been crazy. And staring at all these brushes, most of which I am unaware of how to use, I am almost convinced. Do I really need all these brushes? I asked myself, admittedly more than once. After all, what justice can I give this set? I with no makeup school credentials to boast of, I with no elaborate cosmetic know-how?

But then I realized, there is one thing I can offer this set - and that is the adoration and reverence I felt as I opened the package this morning, my sheer excitement matched only by a little kid on Christmas day. Whether or not I go to makeup school or one day get to call myself a professional makeup artist, one thing's for sure - this set will be treated and used with care, love, and a determined willingness and passion to learn the art.

And besides... there's always YouTube.

Graftobian HD Makeup for Project Headshot Clinic – ACT

Last November, I was privileged to be a part of Project Headshot Clinic's ACT. To give you a brief background, the following is a spiel from the Headshot Clinic website:

The Project Headshot Clinic for 3 years has given a different look at to profile pictures online, it became serving as online billboards on online social networking sites and everyone in it, who participated in Project Headshot Clinic became an instant endorser of the product being advertised, or the cause that was being advocated for whatever that is being advertised, commercial or a particular advocacy.

For over the past three years, the Headshot Clinc team has partnered with the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in fighting and responding to the challenge of HIV/AIDS.

The first awareness campaign of headshot clinic and UNAIDS in 2008 was called “AWARE”, followed by in 2008, and then “MOVE” in 2009 a follow up of the first one which aimed to move people from awareness to readiness to respond and act on this specific issue. This year’s, “ACT”, a clear call to action, where voluntary HIV screening and counseling was provided on given shooting dates by Take The Test and ASP (AIDS Society Philippines).

All headshots will be released online and should be used as primary profile pic on all the participant’s social network sites on December 1, 2010 which happens to be is the global celebration of WORLD AIDS DAY.

Through an application process, the Headshot Clinic selected 100 people to be a part of the campaign. For the shoot itself, I sought help from the makeup artists of Urban Groove Salon. I requested for a simple day look that enhanced my natural features instead of caking it all up. To my pleasant surprise, the artist used the Graftobian High-Definition Warm Palette for my foundation. It was my first time to try out the product and was immensely satisfied with the result. I loved how the foundation stayed true to its color (no oxidizing!), covered well and yet looked completely natural.

Here is my headshot courtesy of Headshot Clinic:

And here is a shot taken under natural lighting:

Given that I celebrated my twentieth birthday on the same day (December 1), I felt blessed to be a part of a movement of that magnitude to signify my transition from adolescence to adulthood.

For more information, please click below:

Project Headshot Clinic

Urban Groove Salon

MY CHRISTMAS WISH THIS YEAR: A NOKIA C7

As a college student turned travel junkie, I know from first-hand experience how important it is to travel light. When your boots are pounding excitedly through the streets of Rome, the last thing you want to be worrying about is whether or not your bulky camera is stowed safely in your bag. When crossing the streets of metropolitan Tokyo, the last thing you need is to be running after wayward maps as they get flapped around by the wind.

While exploring Rome, I made it a point to take as much photos as I can, even when I'm rushed!

Over the last few decades, travelers have simply chalked these nuances up to experience. However, fortunately for us jetsetters, the new Nokia C7 gives us the holiday treat of a lifetime: the ultimate travelling experience.

The Nokia C7 is bursting with features and yet is slim and compact enough to stow comfortably in your pocket. No longer do I have to add strain to my arms and shoulders by carrying a heavy camera while trying to capture the precious moments of my travelling experiences. Up until a few days ago, I've been loyal to my Charm Kabuki Brush, which has served me loyally for many months now. Here is my review on the product:

Product Description:

Get the softest kabuki, that would glide your skin, ever! This brush is very dense and will quicken your foundation application process. This cute pink kabuki will surely be your favorite!

Pros:

- Super soft and non-scratchy on the face

- Dense and big enough to give full, even coverage with minimal time and effort

- Retains most of its shape after multiple washes
- Affordable at P600

Cons:
- Tends to shed easily, even in the middle of application. Hence, I've gone out in public with stray pink fibers on my face before. Yikes!

Overall, I love this brush. However, I was hearing good reviews about Charm's recent addition to their mineral makeup brush line, and so without further ado, the Charm Luxe Flat Top Brush:

Product Description:

As mineral foundation demands to buff, buff, and buff, create that flawless face with the perfect buffing mineral foundation/powder brush, the Charm Luxe Flat Top Brush!

Created with densely packed synthetic bristles, The Charm Luxe Flat Top Brush ensures you a wonderful time in front of your vanity mirror as you enjoy the silky softness of the Charm Luxe Flat Top Brush, and see flawless results with it! Ultra soft, but firm bristles work their way into perfection!

The Charm Luxe Flat Top Brush is great for applying loose mineral foundation, or pressed foundation, to ensure even, buildable, flawless coverage on the face!

Pros:

- Super, super soft! One of the softest brushes I've ever touched!

- Despite its softness, it is incredibly dense which is important for mineral makeup application

- Also gives out even coverage and lovely finishes

- Did not shed, even after washing

- Has no odor/irritating smell

- The long handle is convenient and easier to use in comparison with the kabuki

- Affordable at P600

Cons:

- The bristles are densely packed but as a whole, the brush itself is quite significantly smaller than the Kabuki. Hence, it takes more time (and product) to achieve the desired full, even coverage effect.

The verdict?

It's a tie! I love both these brushes equally, though I have to admit I will be spending more time with the Luxe Flat Top, not only because it's a recent purchase but also because I am falling in love with the longer handle each day. However, on rushed days I will definitely be reaching out for my trusted Kabuki to get the job done ASAP. Both are equally good quality purchases. Kudos to Charm!

Where to buy:

Beauty and Minerals Official Website

Facebook

Contact Sophie at beautyandminerals@gmail.com

*All photos used above are from the Beauty and Minerals website

My Customized Shoes by Hey, Monet!

I received a pair of Chuck Taylors for my birthday last year, and immediately, I knew I wanted to have it customized. I decided on a rather complex design - using the four sides of the shoes to encompass myself, my lifestyle, and beliefs. I narrowed it down to the four values I strongly believed in: freedom, passion, beauty, and love.

I canvassed around the local online community to find the best artist possible without depressing my financial situation. Thus I stumbled upon Monet Dizon under her brand name Hey, Monet! Upon messaging her regarding the design, she replied back with a long and detailed description of her visionary design for my shoes, which included not only the values I believed in but my lifestyle and passions - dancing, traveling, even quotes from my favorite songs. I was astounded by her professionalism and creativity, so I sent her my shoes and settled in for the long wait.

The wait was indeed long, and understandably so, for she was a college student juggling a mountain load of academics. Being a student myself, I patiently waited and gave her all the time she needed. At the end of the day, the wait was indeed worth it.

Say hello to me-in-a-pair-of-shoes:

I'm more than satisfied with the quality, creativity, and price of my shoes so I recommend Monet to anyone and everyone. I was excited and yet terrified for the change, and so I've toyed with the idea vocally but never seriously considered it. That is, until a few weeks back, when I finally decided to take courage and do it.

For the salon, I decided to go with Azta Urban Salon in Katipunan. I initially considered high-end salons such as Louis Kee at The Fort, but for budget-purposes (I'm still a student, after all!) I did not push through with that plan. I've enjoyed numerous services in Azta and found that they knew how to take care of their clients. I also loved how the salon always emitted a young, trendy, yet professional vibe.

The day before my hair coloring, I dropped by to meet the stylist and set my appointment. I met the gorgeous Mylene, one of their senior stylists, and she sat down and talked to me about the services they offer. I've always wanted to try out L'Oreal's INOA, and Mylene helpfully recommended color shades that would suit my skin tone. What I loved about Mylene is that she really did look gorgeous - fashionable yet professional, and best of all, she had lovely, lovely hair. The moment I met her, I felt assured that I would be in good and capable hands.

And so the day of reckoning arrived. Mylene smilingly met me at my appointed time and ushered me to one of Azta's chairs. My hair was dry-shampooed (always a favorite Azta experience!) then washed by the junior stylist, Leslie, who took amazingly good care of me. Mylene and Leslie then started working the color into my hair. The process took about two hours, with Leslie helpfully offering me drinks and magazines in between. Finally, after the color has set in, Leslie proceeded with the Pureology hair treatment (packaged for free when you avail of the INOA service), followed by the most amazing back massage. It took all I could not to fall asleep in the chair! The process, all in all, took three hours to finish.

The result?

Taken with flash, to give you an idea of what it looks like under natural light.

All I can say is: why ever did I wait that long? I'm super loving my new hair! Talk about confidence levels hitting the roof. I haven't felt this good about myself in days! A huge thanks to Azta, and of course Mylene and Leslie, who were both super nice and down to earth. The INOA Hair Coloring service for my hair length (Long) cost P2,100 inclusive of a free Pureology Hair Treatment.

Thoughts?

Why I've Been M.I.A.

A rough draft of an article I wrote for my organization's magazine regarding a dance competition in my University, of which the team I'm heading is participating in. Untitled, for now.

The campus is feverish with tension. As the academic day closes, an entirely new scene unfolds. Every available open space is claimed by groups of sweaty, synchronized bodies, stealing furtive glances at their opponents moving not too far. The hot Philippine sun sets to a mix of sound, seemingly out of place as it reverberates through the greenery of the Ateneo campus.

If you’ve ever walked through Ateneo only to be assaulted by flailing arms and legs in sync with music more appropriate for clubs – then yes, it’s RIB season once again.

The RIB or Rhythm in Blue event, hosted by the Company of Ateneo Dancers, is an inter-organization dance competition held every year at September. Through the years, it has evolved into one of the fiercest competitions in Ateneo, with not only a hefty cash prize at stake but supreme bragging rights as well… that is, until next year, where it starts all over again and the stakes are raised even higher.

Dance teams representing their organizations are known to pour out excessive amounts of their energy into the competition. Some start rehearsals as early as the summer before the semester. Most, if not all, hire dance coaches for their expertise in choreography. Money, effort, time, sweat, blood, heart and soul are spent on a weekly basis. There is a shift in priorities, a sudden (sometimes grudging) embracing of sacrifice. Weekends, dates, extra-curricular activities, and sometimes even academics take a back seat.

I’ve always asked myself, what exactly makes it worth it? Is it the money? The pride? The big shiny trophy? Why do I keep coming back, year after year, only to sacrifice and miss the same conveniences in life (sleep, anyone?); to dance on the same stage?

One may assume that this is the moment I dramatically quote any Hollywood dance film and talk about how dance can save lives and even, in fact, change a whole generation. Wrong. I have no earth-shattering, life-changing anecdotes to share. I can, however, answer the question posed earlier. It is not about the money, nor the pride, nor the big shiny trophy, though all these may be enough motivation for some. It is not about the bragging rights (though, admittedly, those would be nice).

It’s about that feeling you get when you’re on the stage, seconds before the music begins. It’s the light on your face, blinding you so you can’t see the crowd, and yet you know they’re there because not only can you hear them, you can almost feel them; it’s like they’ve become a part of you. It’s feeling your heart scrambling to burst out of your chest, your legs burning in exhausted agony, and yet your soul is free, alive, and the memory is seared forever in your head.

It’s seeing your teammates’ faces, seeing your joy and passion echoed in theirs. It is working unceasingly, frustratingly, exhaustedly towards a goal – and yet, despite your sacrifices, never feeling like you’re working because you’re doing what you love, what you were born to do. Fatigue, exhaustion, and baggage coming from all sides. Yet despite all these, I find that I am alive for the first time in months. Rediscovering strength and courage is an exhausting yet fulfilling process.

It may be the little things, like getting out of my comfort zone, doing great in a once impossible oral exam in Philosophy, or falling in love with Persian food (and even trying out brains! Me! The picky eater!), but without having to expound further publicly, each of these steps are personally significant. No longer am I subconsciously hindering myself from my own destiny.

I sound horrifically New Age-y, yet no words can explain as fully as these. I have never been more consciously aware of my own self and the feeling is amazing. The process is exhausting, and time and time again I stumble, yet I will not lose sight of what is truly worth it.

And to signify my newfound peace, I'd like to share a very fitting accessory I stumbled upon on the ring trays of Forever 21:

I originally wanted this double ring in gold, but they ran out of my size. However, I came to love this one just as much. Very fitting for the Blue Eagle in me as well. Please excuse the chipped nail polish!

In a less personal and more superficial light, may I share what came in the mail this week?

Video Killed the Radio Star, a gorgeous dress designed by Skulls and Bones. Managed to grab the last piece on sale. Can't wait to debut this next week! And to share the love, I managed to get lucky again by snatching third place in Aisa's blog giveaway!

It hasn't come in the mail yet, but you bet I'm checking everyday! Super excited, thanks Aisa!

In a rather more serious note, I couldn't end this entry without giving due respect, without at least mentioning the tragedy that occurred in Philippine soil recently. It may seem ill-fitting to discuss such material things in light of the events that have happened over the past few days. The hostage crisis that occurred on the 23rd of August was heartbreaking. But despite these events we must, as one people, take courage in any form. For what do we become without strength? Who do we become without hope? One man's act does not define a nation. However, my heart goes out to those innocently and wrongly affected. My sincerest condolences to the families of the victims.

It's time to get up, Philippines. It's a difficult battle to fight, but it's worth it.

Review: L'Oreal True Match Super-Blendable Foundation

Over the weekend, I accidentally left my portable makeup kit at my dormitory (which contained all my daily makeup essentials) and got stuck with my train case, which housed everything else. It was the perfect opportunity to road test liquid foundation for daily wear. Normally, I would be too afraid to slather it on every day, but when it came to this instance, I had no other choice. And so, on to my review!

L'Oreal True Match Super-Blendable Foundation

SPF 17/PA++

Matches perfectly the skin texture & tone

+ Hyaluronic Acid

I picked up the shade N7 or Nude Amber, which is the darkest shade available here in the Philippines. The next shade up is a few numbers down and already too light on me. Since the above photo doesn't depict the foundation's true color in natural light, here's a closer match when shot with flash:

What I love about this product:

- Contains sun protection.

- Comes with a pump, although as you can evidently see in the photos if careless it may get messy

- Generally more affordable at P995 (give or take a few pesos)

- Very easy to blend, buildable light to medium coverage
- Matte finish

- My skin did not show signs of obvious skin irritations, but since I was going through a rather - ah, hormonal time then, I cannot account for sure.

What I hate about this product:

- It oxidizes on my skin, making me look muddy.

- The closest matching shade was N7, N standing for "Neutral", supposedly for skin undertone. No wonder in some light settings, I look red/pink.

- Poor color range available locally, so no, it's not a "true match". The sales assistants also have no idea what they're selling, one even tried persuading me that the N's and G's on the labels were just pretty letters.

- Though it looks too dark in person (either because it oxidizes or because it's a poor match), it gives off a horrible white cast in photos.

- Poor oil control. It gives a matte finish but I tend to look oilier than usual after quite some time, even with setting powder.

- Tends to get flaky, and accentuates lines and pores.

- When the product is swatched on my wrist, it blends evenly. Then after a few minutes, magically, glitters appear. I've tested this numerous times, to the same effect. This irks me because I have NO idea where the glitters are coming from! The foundation seems glitter-free, but I guess not.The glitters on my hand are pretty prominent, too. I immediately checked my face, and it seemed to be glitter free -- expect for, wait. There are glitters around my eyes! Ack!

Bottomline: you get what you pay for. It is a very mediocre drugstore foundation, which I will not be repurchasing again. At this point, I am leaning towards investing in (and saving up for!) a fantastic brand that would give me the results I love. As I mentioned in my Maybelline review, I am looking for three things in a daily foundation: (a) gives good, medium (but not cakey!) coverage (b) controls oil and, most importantly, (c) doesn't break me out.

NARS Sheer Glow VS. Bobbi Brown Oil-Free Even Finish

Help me choose?

L'amor che move il sole e l'altre stelle

When you're lost in those woods, it sometimes takes you a while to realize that you are lost. For the longest time, you can convince yourself that you've just wandered off the path, that you'll find your way back to the trailhead any moment now. Then night falls again and again, and you still have no idea where you are, and its time to admit that you have bewildered yourself so far off the path that you dont even know from which direction the sun rises anymore.

- Elizabeth Gilbert

For two years, I've put myself in the backseat, equating that love meant sacrifice, even if it meant losing yourself in the process. I ignored the warning signs, rationalized broken standards, made all the excuses. I settled for less without even knowing it.

It took two long years before reality kicked in and I saw my predicament in its true form - emotionally manipulative, financially draining, repeatedly dishonest, wholly unappreciative, and - to sum up a complicated history - simply just not worth it. But despite my fierce independence, despite my views on women and modernity, I was a fearful coward; I allowed myself to be trapped by my own situation, terrified of losing my comfort zone, hesitant to grasp happiness in fear of pain and grief.

But finally, I had to stand up for myself. The fear of living the rest of my life in such a predicament became greater than any other fear.

I expected loss, a great loss that eats your soul. But it did not come. How can I feel loss when I've already been losing in the first place? Almost immediately, a dark cloud lifted from my horizon, and I found space to feel what I've always been longing for - happiness, freedom, hope. Appreciation for others. Time for myself. And most of all, a fierce excitement and desire for life.

But of course, I cannot cheat the process. I cannot simply walk away from two years of my life without experiencing any pain. But greater than my pain is my relief. And greater than my relief is a kind of happiness that makes you feel like your skin is about to burst into flames.

L'amor che move il sole e l'altre stelle.

The love that moves the sun and the other stars.

No longer am I settling for anything less.

Review: Maybelline Clear Smooth Minerals Liquid Foundation

I have a love-hate relationship with mineral makeup. My budding cosmetic interest coincided with the mineral makeup boom, making it the first cosmetic product I've ever slapped on my face. I've never actually gone the traditional route in fear of breaking out because of the "harmful chemicals". You see, I've been totally brainwashed.

Over the past few months I've been in search of liquid foundation that (a) gives good medium (but not cakey!) coverage (b) controls oil and, most importantly, (c) doesn't break me out. The swirl-tap-buff method is getting tedious, and I hate the fact that powder accentuates pores and fine lines, making me look older.

So over the weekend, I picked up Maybelline's Clear Smooth Minerals Healthy Natural Liquid Foundation in W03 Apricot Sand.

According to Maybelline:

CLEAR SMOOTH MINERALS Liquid Foundation is a breathable yet full coverage that gives a healthy luminosity. Clinically proven: No oil. No fragrance. SPF 18/PA+++.

What I love about this product:
- It contains SPF.
- It is locally and readily available.
- It's affordable at only P299.

What I hate about this product:
- Full coverage, my arse! The coverage is very sheer, almost none.
- Oily finish. My face oiled up the minute it touched my face. I stared at my face in dismay and attempted to correct it with finishing/setting powder, but after an hour or so my face was an oil slick once again. I'm not even that oily!
- I find it difficult to spread. It refuses to cooperate with brushes so you'd have to make do with your fingers or a sponge.
- Limited shade selection. Apricot Sand, which is the darkest in the range, is still too light on me (for reference I'm NC 40-42 in MAC).

I can't attest to whether or not this product causes breakouts because I hated it so much that I stopped using it on the second day. I guess I'm still stuck with mineral makeup for now.

The search continues!

Weekend Thoughts: Birthday Shopping

Birthday shopping is always, always the best. And it's not even my birthday!

A month ago I wrote about why I'm contemplating naming my future child "Renee", as a tribute to my mother. This entry is further proof of how selfless a woman she can be. On the seventh of August, she celebrated her birthday. The children pulled out the yearly bouquet of roses and cake, while Dad sponsored the generous celebratory dining experience.

However, no special day diminishes the fact that the children had immediate needs - my sister requested the aid of my mom in shopping for a costume for her school event. And so, birthday aside, she spent most of the afternoon pursuing the racks of SM department store - not exactly the way you'd want to spend your birthday.

I tagged along for the afternoon, encouraging my mom to buy something for herself. She ended up spending hours on the shoe section, (the newly renovated section of SM Southmall is simply fabulous!) trying on different brands. Seeing that she was at least enjoying herself, I drifted in and out of her presence to pick up some needs of my own.

The funniest thing is that after hours of trying on countless pairs, she simply gave up! My mother never fails to surprise me. Only she would go home empty-handed on her birthday and still continue to smile contentedly. Not once did she complain.

And so, thanks to my dearest mother, my recent haul from SM:

ONE: Oops, everything from SM except for this one. Finally purchased a copy on sale at Power Books, Alabang Town Center for P419 (from P559). This one is thanks to my dearest brother.

TWO: Men's gray jogging pants for dance training which has escalated since the month of August. I bought from the men's department because the ladies' slim fit jazz pants were stifling. I love how loose this pair is without looking too baggy, just right for training. Purchased for around P500.

THREE: Nichido Mineral Kohl Pencil, which I am falling in love with. Super steal for only P138.

FOUR: Ray Ban-like sunnies from the Ladies' Accessories section for only P199. I saw a similar pair being sold in Topshop for about P1,000, so I'm lucky to pick this one up!

FIVE: Maybelline Clear Smooth Minerals Liquid Foundation in W03 Apricot Sand, for P299.

Reviews to come soon. And to my dearest mother, happy birthday. Know that we appreciate everything you do and that you are always in your family's hearts. I love you!

Accidentally Meeting Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds

It was a bright, sunny late afternoon in Hollywood, California. It was the summer of 2009. My family and I just spent most of the morning and the entire afternoon devouring each and every attraction Universal Studios had to offer and we were dead tired, our feet groaning in protest with every step we took. We were on our way back to our hotel when we spotted huge throngs of people gathered in front of Grauman's Chinese Theater. Curious, we gravitated towards the crowds and spotted this:

It was the "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" premiere night! I was beyond ecstatic. I was obsessed with X-Men as a young child - I bought and read the comics, watched the cartoon series, and even assembled a dossier on the characters by printing out character profile sheets and compiling them in a clear book (in my defense, it seemed very cool back then). Though this obsession has certainly died down as I got older, my X-Men interest carried on, pushing me to watch all the films in the franchise. And plus, ever since "Kate & Leopold", I've had the hugest crush on Hugh Jackman.

As soon as I fully realized what was happening, I started screaming and jumping around like the fangirl I was. I quickly scanned over the long queues, and my heart sank as I realized there were just too many people. It was very crowded; we were across the street trying to tiptoe over the heads of the people in front and could barely see any of the celebrities. Nevertheless, the air was charged with excitement, and so despite my fatigue, I decided to stay.

An hour passed and a couple of well-built men in suits started passing around foam claws, which the crowd eagerly hoarded. Fortunately, my siblings and I managed to snag our own!

Please forgive the photo! I looked very, very young, barefaced, and tired! Nonetheless, as you can see, it's all smiles.

After another hour, a sudden buzz radiated through the crowd. Craning our heads, we spotted a few figures moving their way down the barrier that blocked off the large, waiting crowd. Tugging at my sister (my brother had long given up by then), I grabbed her hand and started subtly pushing my way to the front of the queue. Bless our lithe figures, for we were able to squeeze our way - despite the heavily pressed crowds - to the front of the barrier! Sneaky, eh?

Guess who was moving down the street?

Ryan Reynolds is gorgeous in person! However, this happened a few months shy of "The Proposal", so I wasn't too crazy about him then. However, I did manage to snag his autograph:

Yes, I was this close! Ryan posed for a photo with the man beside me. Are those sweat stains under his arm? Celebrities are human too, after all.

After Ryan had left, the crowd fidgeted anxiously, waiting for the main event. By this time, I've made quite good friends with the Americans beside me, and they reassured me that Hugh a.k.a. Crush Of My Life would eventually turn up. And after a few more minutes of waiting, I was not disappointed. Look who's coming!

My heart started beating double time. I couldn't believe that I was going to meet Hugh Jackman, the man I've idolized for half of my childhood. My sister got her pad paper and pen ready for the autograph and I clutched my camera to my heart, hoping against hope that he would stop for a photograph. There were hundreds of people calling out, taking photos, and demanding autographs/photos and Hugh was moving fairly fast down the street, unfortunately having to ignore many requests. I crossed my fingers.

Almost there... Just a little bit closer...

In the photo above, he was already signing my sister's autograph. I almost passed out, I couldn't believe I was face to face with possibly the hottest older man I've ever laid my eyes on. Lowering my camera, I leaned closer to him. "Hugh, can I have a picture?" I asked, my voice shaking, hoping he heard me over the voice from his cellphone. He looked up at me, smiled, and said "Sure, sweetie."

Sweetie. SWEETIE.

HUGH JACKMAN CALLED ME SWEETIE.

I almost died. But I had no time to revel in the moment. He was already distracted, and so I quickly moved closer to him and, without thinking, whipped out the camera to take a picture of us the way you'd take a vanity picture of yourself - arm outstretched, hoping we'd fit in the frame. It was clearly a mistake, because he was so tall! But I was pressed for time so I quickly held down the shutter and hoped for the best.

Nothing happened.

We stood there for five long seconds, waiting for the shutter to click. Hugh chuckled (Hugh chuckled! We were laughing together!), obviously also wondering what was happening. "Come on, please please please" I mentally implored my digital camera. I pressed the shutter again and held it down, and after a few more agonizing seconds, I got it.

Turns out, I forgot to set my camera to automatic and it was stuck in the "Flash Off" setting. But miraculously, despite my hand shaking and the no-flash setting, the photo didn't turn out blurry. However, I hated how zoomed in the photo is and that it looks slightly Photoshopped because of the way Hugh's height towered over me, casting a shadow on me whilst he looked very bright and sunny. Why didn't I just hand my camera to the nearest bystander to take our picture? Why?

But as soon as Hugh turned to me and said "That was a long picture" with a smile, I knew it was all worth it - the fatigue, the crowds, the standing in line for hours. A split second after his smile he was already hurriedly moving down the street - and at that moment, I stopped complaining. I was damn lucky.

Goodbye, Crush Of My Life. Though you may have forgotten my face the moment you walked away, meeting you will always be the highlight of that summer. Even if you did look kind of orangey.

Here is my sister's reward for her efforts:

I just realized, I think we pictured the autograph backwards. Oh well.

I still can't believe I accidentally walked into the celebrity meeting of a lifetime. Never in my life did I ever imagine I would meet my childhood hero, not to mention his incredibly hot co-actor. But then, life surprises you at the most unexpected times when in unexpected places. That's what I love most about summers - the travelling, the endless possibilities... but most of all, it's the experiences and memories you make under clear, lovely skies.

I'm feelin' lucky! It's a proven fact, and I have long since stopped hoping. But when it comes to contest entries based on writing, I have all my fingers and toes crossed! So imagine my delight when I received an email from Sex and Sensibilities this morning.

I love SAS because it's informative and entirely catered to the modern Filipina (see here for related entry). As it implores on the website's information page:

Sex and Sensibilities, as its name implies, is a balance of sex and responsible choice. It is a site that hopes to be your trusted haven to get practical information about sex; a private place where your questions about sexuality will be answered with compassion, intelligence, and most importantly, always with honesty and respect for your choice.

Last July, I entered a contest to win one of five Brazilian wax gift certificates to be given away from The Strip. I've always wanted to try The Strip's infamous waxing, as they're rumored to be very professional. Thanks to SAS, I now get to try the procedure out for free! I am delighted my entry got picked, thank you so much to the lovely people behind SAS and of course, The Strip whom I will be visiting very soon.

For more information about the contest, click here.
To see the winning entries (spot mine!), click here.
To follow SAS on Facebook, click here.

Weekend Thoughts: Rockwell SuperSale Bazaar, Powerbooks Sale, Angelina Jolie's "Salt"

And so we transition smoothly into the month of August, and this weekend was no better way to do it. Much of last week was spent battling with sudden insomnia and it's a relief to have my normal sleeping patterns back. Spending four to six hours in bed struggling to fall asleep and not doing so until the sun has already fully risen is not one of my fondest memories.

Last Friday I headed down to the Rockwell Tent for the Super Sale Bazaar. Though the flyers circulating online boasted of great deals and huge discounts, the last two or so bazaars were a bit of a letdown so I didn't bother saving up or even bringing cash.

I promptly ate my words because there were so many good finds! Oh, and thanks so much to Bestie for our waived entrance fee.

I passed by Power Books today and noticed that they were on a massive sale! Almost everything going for at least 10-20%, and ridiculously good finds for up to 80% off.

The sale does not disappoint. Spotted "The Swan Thieves" by Elizabeth Kostova and "Drood" by Dan Simmons both going for around P300-400 each from P600-700. Planning to go back within the week for the latter as it has seemingly more good reviews online and to be frank, sounds much more interesting.

I've been eyeing this piece since a few months back so it'll be nice to finally get my hands on it. After a quick stop to check out the sale, I made my way to the cinemas to watch "Salt". The trailer was exciting and it almost toppled "Inception" over the weekend so I figured it must be worth watching.

No spoilers, don't worry! I've always been a fan of intelligent movies and sadly, this is not one of them. The plot was just so-so, not much of a twist in the end, the story not compelling enough. The action scenes were a bit too orchestrated, some entirely unbelievable and corny. However, the plot moves fast and the transitions were smooth. I loved how it started but despised how it ended. It was an excellent premise, I'd have to say - the first half of the movie was gripping. Poor execution and conclusion was Salt's downfall. Entirely watchable, of course - Angelina Jolie is pure eye candy - but that's all there is to it.

Have a good August, everyone! After months of research and trying out numerous individual brushes, I find myself finally ready to invest in a set. This is purely in emotional terms, though - economically speaking, I'm wholly unprepared. However, a little obsessing in preparation never hurts anyone, so I've narrowed it down to three brands, all of which my heart is currently lusting after.

But there can only be one. Decisions, decisions!

SIGMA MAKEUP PROFESSIONAL BRUSHES COMPLETE KIT IN PINK

Pros:
- International brand with plenty of reviews online, so I'm assured of quality
- Numbering is similar to MAC's (though I hear this is slowly being changed)
- Includes a duo fibre brush, which I love to use for stippling
- It's pink!

Cons:
- It's expensive!
- Would have to pay extra for the shipping cost
- Not available locally
- Will have to wait at least a month for arrival
- In case I'm unlucky and I get a bad/damaged/poor quality set, having it exchanged would be next to impossible

To be honest, I'm not seriously considering Sigma for practicality's sake. It's way too expensive for my taste at $89 (plus around $14 international shipping) and I'm deathly afraid of it getting lost in the mail. I distrust the Philippine post office so I would rather not risk it. But it was worth mentioning, this set is so lovely.

It boils down to a battle of two:

CHARM TRAVEL SET PRO

Above is a photo of the old set. Beauty and Minerals, pioneer of the Charm brushes, promises a new and improved set within the first week of August.

Pros:

- It's available locally

- It's more affordable (at roughly P2,000 give or take a few hundred)

- The brushes are especially catered to mineral makeup users such as myself

- It's also pink! Haha.

Cons:

- It's a travel set, meaning, shorter handles

- I already have the full-sized dual fibre brush and it's fairly portable, so having a travel-sized one is a bit pointless

- I also have the full-sized all-purpose eyeshadow blending brush, and from my experience, after 3-4 washes the brush gets super scratchy. I can barely use it now because it pricks my eye

painfully whenever I use it

- No reviews of the product yet (it's a new, claimed-to-be-improved set) so I can't say if the problems with the old brushes will be addressed and resolved

Charm seems like a fit for my personality, but the short handles irk me and I'm not assured about the longevity of their brushes due to previous experience. There's no assurance that it won't get scratchy and painful after a while, something that negates the whole purpose of investing in the first place.

SUESH 12-PIECE ULTRA LUXE SET

This set is absolutely gorgeous! I'm especially curious about the flat foundation brush. However, this one's a handmade, special edition set and is priced at a whopping P4,000 - almost the same damage as the Sigma ones! It's lovely, but too expensive. So I'm setting my eyes on the next best thing...

SUESH 12-PIECE SET IN GRAY

Pros:

- It's available locally

- It's more affordable as well (P2,200 give or take)

- Trusted brand when it comes to makeup brushes and accessories

- Also available in purple, but I love the gray version so much more, looks classier

Cons:
- Mixed reviews. Some brushes do not work well/are unusable, according to online sources
- Not entirely sure if I'll get my money's worth.

As of the moment, I'm currently setting my eyes on Suesh. I've always been curious about their brushes and they seem generally well-reviewed. However, I'm not one hundred percent sure on my decision, so it's subject to change. I've also been eyeing their 15 and 16-piece sets, since there's not much price difference.

SUESH 16-PIECE SET

All Natural: Goat, squirrel, pony and raccoon hair - P2,500

SUESH "THE BLUSH" 15-PIECE SET

Hair: Synthetic and badger hair - P1,600

Is it more wise to purchase all natural animal hair or a set with natural mixed with synthetic?

The battle continues for now! Their lipsticks are said to be highly pigmented with an impressive color range/payoff. Economics, however, is NYX's strongest pull - at roughly P160 a pop (for the lipsticks; it goes around P100 higher for glosses, if I'm not mistaken), it makes hoarding a lot easier on the pocket.

I ordered three lipsticks - Tea Rose, Fig, and B52, and three glosses - Beige, Smokey Look, and Ballerina Pink. Though their lipsticks are the ones more raved about, I tried out their glosses just for the heck of it. I used to be a swipe-on-gloss-and-go kind of girl - I have to say, I used to be a lot richer then.

Curious about the lipsticks? I was too! These were the very lipsticks to hit my make-up stash.

The lipsticks were indeed extremely high-pigmented and very creamy. One swipe is more than enough for an instant burst of color. Tea Rose is a nice, soft pink while Fig is a shocking bright pale pink. I can't describe B52 as my mom swiped it from my stash before I could use it.

However, after weeks of using it, I ended up hating the lipsticks. The colors were amazing, but the formula was extremely drying. My lips have a tendency to chap and it made the situation a whole lot worse. NYX dried my lips to a point of cracking and even bleeding. Applying all sorts of medicated lip balm didn't work. The formula also accentuates the lines on my lips, making the color "sit in" the dry areas. It was extremely unattractive! The staying power is extremely poor as well - not even an hour on your lips.

The glosses aren't as bad but they can be a bit drying as well. I used Smokey Look for a while and was fairy satisfied with it. Nothing special, though.

Nonetheless, here are the swatches:

As for now, I'm currently using my Estée Lauder Pure Color Long Lasting Lipstick in 183 Sugar Honey and am outrageously happy about it. Thank you to whoever gave me this as a gift; I picked this up randomly from my debut gift stash a few months ago and ended up loving it. Considering a separate review in the near future.

The only reason NYX is still sitting around my traincase is the possibility of needing it for a shoot or an event - but then again, how often does that happen? However, should you still wish to try it out for yourself, I recommend Sol of Digital Traincase for your NYX fix, as it is not available locally.

The Pink Movement at Republiq Club

Not wanting to pass up an opportunity to dance, last Saturday night I headed out to Republiq Club at Resort World for The Pink Movement, an all-women dance marathon to raise awareness against cervical cancer. The event featured Georcelle Dapat-Sy, artistic director of G-Force and was hosted by Iya Villania, JC Cuadrado, and DJ Suzy of Magic 89.9.

Resort World, I have to say, is quickly climbing up to the top of Manila's social ladder. I couldn't help but be impressed at the interior and salivate over the high-end boutiques awaiting their impending opening. Republiq Club is only one of its newly opened amenities, but already it was teeming with Manila's finest. Aside from the leering D.O.M.s scampering in and out of Resort World's casino (the only flaw for me in an otherwise pretty picture), the place is reminiscent of a tasteful Las Vegas.

Without further ado, some coverage of the event:

Me (left) and the lovely L, my date for the night who earns credit for all photos of the said event. I find dark eyes to be very compelling and sexy. I love how eyeliner instantly defines the eyes, making them stand out. Lately, there has been a hype for gel liner, which usually comes in a smudge pot form. Reluctant to leave the efficiency of pencil liners (a pot and a liner brush isn't exactly convenient for someone on-the-go), today I'm reviewing what was hyped up to be the next best thing.

The Waterproof Gel Liner by In2it has been receiving many positive reviews in various beauty blogs and women's forums. I headed over to Watson's in SM Megamall and purchased my own in the shade WG01 Very Black. It conveniently comes with its own sharpener.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RqPJ_y_De8w/TELXRv3xrqI/AAAAAAAAAGA/2s4KMv3NgY8/s400/in2itreview.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495191195253583522" />

I badly want to love this eyeliner. It has a creamy consistency which makes it glide easily on the eyelids, hence it does not tug nor irritate the eyes. The color is extremely pigmented and one swipe is all you need for application, which makes creative manipulation of the liner (such as winged edges) very fast and easy to do. And lastly, it does not budge - at all. It's rub, smudge, and sweat proof. It claims to be waterproof as well, although I haven't put that to test.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_RqPJ_y_De8w/TELa6GDxmMI/AAAAAAAAAGI/CWUJXocyieI/s400/in2it.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495195186939140290" />

However, its creamy consistency also has its downfall. This baby smudges like crazy! It takes a while before it dries upon application, and once it does, it's budge proof. However, as you can see in the photo below, the gel liner was very "wet" and caused the color to bleed and smudge over my upper lids. Not very sexy at all.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RqPJ_y_De8w/TELcg-m0T4I/AAAAAAAAAGQ/Nf9wnZ8HkbI/s400/in2it2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5495196954465161090" />

I've tried keeping my eyes closed to let it dry first but it seems to smudge immediately upon application, making it messy and time-consuming. And for someone who likes to line her eyes heavily, this product is a big no for me.

I'd only recommend this product to those who have the ability to line their eyes very, very thinly; have dry eyelids; or simply have enough time in their hands to blot every now and then with makeup remover or prep with shadow. I, unfortunately, negate all of the above, rendering this product useless for me.

I bought this for around P300-P400, and will not be repurchasing again.

Why I'm contemplating naming my future child "Renee"

My mother is a crazy woman.

I repeatedly muttered these words to myself as she excitedly dragged me across a beauty drug store. Waiting, on the other end, was a saleslady with an almost sincere smile plastered on her face and an ashy blonde-brown-copper explosion in exchange for normal hair.

"Look, she colored her own hair! You can color yours like that, too!" my mom exclaimed, gesturing to the scene of the crime as the saleslady held up a box of dye I don't recognize.

Not wanting to burst my mom's bubble, I tentatively ask which color she used and whether or not the color ran true to the photo shown in the box.

The saleslady picks up the box of her color, studies the front image, and suddenly pauses. She runs a hand through her hair, exposing the inner layers. "Well, the first time..."

She trailed off, not having to say anything more.

Those roots! Those different-colored ends! Those horribly colored inner layers! The very mixture of the color itself which personifies the term jeje!

My mom continues to smile, not seeing anything wrong with the situation.

I politely thank the saleslady, quickly pull on my mother's elbow, and hope for a quick escape. That is, until my mom turns to the cashier, pulls me aside and says "She was nice! She recommended me this shampoo, she says it's effective in getting rid of dandruff!"

My mom holds up the shampoo bottle. It was written entirely in Korean.

It's moments like this that remind me of how different I am from my mother. I grew up in Manila, a city girl by heart whilst she, a simple woman from the province of Leyte, is completely devoid of materialism. I am modern and outspoken, she's religious and conservative. I thrive on intellect, she survives on practicality.

We agree on very little, and argue on a lot. But it doesn't matter that she gets her hair done by the neighborhood parlor for fifty bucks because "all expensive salons are the same anyway", that I have to remind her everyday to put on even just a tiny bit of powder or foundation (which she mostly ignores), that she gave me body spray/perfume to use as deodorant when I was a kid (which gave me an allergy) because it was cheaper, or that she falls for any suave salesperson and uses me as her guinea pig (never again!)

All that matters is that at the end of the day, everything she does, she does out of love. For weeks, I've been whining and musing about coloring my hair. She may have erred in judgment, choosing the saleslady with the worst dye job ever - but she saw that saleslady and thought of me.

She is kind, caring, and thoughtful. She is the kind of mother who will drive two hours just to see you. She is the kind of mother who will answer your call with a "Hi baby, are you okay? Do you need anything?" no matter how old you are. She is the kind of mother who will wake up at the crack of dawn just so she can cook you breakfast. She is the kind of mother who will pack the said breakfast in car-friendly tupperware because you spent too long in the shower. She is the kind of mother who will unceasingly be on her knees every night, praying for her family and the welfare of her children.

My mother is a crazy woman. She is also the best of her kind.

Love is Blind

Lord! I would rather be blind than to have not read at all.

In this note, here are some titles I am aching to bury my nose in.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 264px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RqPJ_y_De8w/TDi5WdbhFcI/AAAAAAAAAFQ/pG_CVITwVjA/s400/her-fearful-symmetry.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492343541086623170" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RqPJ_y_De8w/TDi5oaATFiI/AAAAAAAAAFY/xAXwfSHN2Cg/s400/400000000000000175978_s4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492343849404798498" />

Not available locally/stocks sold out as of now.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 282px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_RqPJ_y_De8w/TDi6AmKgZqI/AAAAAAAAAFg/d9dI67av6Go/s400/n342044.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492344264985700002" />
To be released in the United States this coming September.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 265px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RqPJ_y_De8w/TDi6UK5hx2I/AAAAAAAAAFo/zwofVs8FBOI/s400/0670021407.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492344601264113506" />
As of now, only available in hardcover.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 264px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_RqPJ_y_De8w/TDi6qpBeb8I/AAAAAAAAAFw/tn-ZicRazmg/s400/702157.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5492344987307634626" />
Yeah, I know, chick lit. Money spent on books made way for more "practical" things - like swimwear in the middle of December and experimental makeup.

It's been a while since I've splurged on literature. Experience teaches that this is an endeavor worth pursuing. Reading has been my first love. However, it is a high maintenance, flighty passion; fickle, it is never content and burns a hole through my wallet. But each time feels like the first kiss - discovering the passion, the joy, and opening your mind into an entirely different world and time. The precious seconds of opening a newly acquired book, the scent of unopened pages, and the contented sigh after a delicious read - makes it all worth it.

The Modern Filipina

I was browsing the internet when I came across an article that really struck me. It's entitled "The Modern Filipina", written by Sasha Manuel for StyleManila.com.

Who is the modern Filipina?

With all the changes happening all around and having observed how the culture evolved for the past two (2) decades, I can’t help but ask the question. How do you define such a woman?

We have to admit that we come from a society filled with rules (not to mention, superstitions). Most of us grew up with strict and conservative parents, surrounded by meddling extended families (who often think that their opinions should be taken into serious consideration). Our actions measured and, oftentimes, directed by traditions and filial responsibilities. And, yes, women often suffer the worst end of the stick — underestimated, undervalued, and typecasted.

I grew up with voices telling me (that I’m also currently trying to debunk, I should add, and no, I’m not going mad, heh): plunging necklines, mid-rifts, short skirts and shorts, strapless/tubes, backless and bra-less outfits are sacrilege; t-shirts and shorts should be worn over bikinis (heck, it’s even “bad” to wear bikinis!) or swimsuits; having your photo taken in any manner that connotes something sexual (save that it’s already artless nudity — that’s a given, gah) is considered indecent; you should be timid and submissive (i.e. no ambition whatsoever); and, yes, this last one’s a classic — you should be thinking about marriage and family by the age of 25 PLUS say goodbye to having a career as soon as you do.

I can hear folks crying different sorts of things in outrage. Some will agree and others won’t but let me reiterate, this is based from my own personal experience and, yes, side notes are personal opinions as well.

Moving on.

Personally, I’ve changed. And since I believe that fashion reflects one’s personality, my personal style preferences grew up with the times; adapted to the shifted paradigm. Thinking things over helped me take a shot at a definition.

The modern Filipina then is a woman who embraces her colour and celebrates the culture and traditions that she grew up in. Armed with an accommodating nature, she opens herself up to outside influences that will edify and enrich her life. A woman who is not afraid to explore unchartered terrain for she’s aware of her roots; she knows where she came from. Her thoughts and opinions unabashedly materialise — reflected in her taste in fashion and makeup, at times — and she stands by it.

There is no shame in embracing one’s femininity and sexuality. Though, I show more skin and wear makeup or that I’m still single at 31, these things don’t make me less of a Filipina. Like I said, the country is evolving, so should the people living in it. It’s all a matter of filtering out the bad influences and exercising common sense. I’m not suggesting that you go against society, just don’t give it power over your life as a woman and as a Filipina.

How about you? How do YOU define the modern Filipina?

Growing up in a typical Filipino household, I am no stranger to irrational conservatism and the blurred line between religion and cultural conventions. Though there are many things about my culture I would love to do without (the meddling extended families is one of them!), I am eternally proud to be a modern Filipina.

A Filipina who appreciates her culture and roots, but seeks to break through the borders of closed-minded society for her own personal growth and awakening. A Filipina who is not afraid to break conventions and stereotypes for the better. A young woman who will let her passion and voice be heard, and yet still encompass the qualities a true Filipina possesses - grace, beauty, and strength.

Here's to you, the modern Filipinas out there. Celebrate and embrace your beauty.
